Love Your Clothes For Longer: The Gini London Care Guide

Fabric Care

At Gini London, we design pieces to be part of your best memories.

Taking care of your clothes doesn't just keep them looking brand new; it’s also the kindest thing you can do for the planet.

Follow these simple steps to ensure your favourite items stay in great condition for years to come.

1. The Golden Rule: Wash Less

Most of our occasion-wear and outerwear doesn’t need to be washed after every wear.

  • Refresh: Hang your garment in a well-ventilated room or near an open window overnight to naturally release odours.
  • Spot Clean: If you have a small mark, use a damp cloth and a drop of gentle detergent to treat the spot rather than washing the whole garment.

2. Fabric-Specific Tips

Different materials need different levels of TLC. Always check the care label inside your garment.

Polyester & Chiffon
Machine wash at 30°C on a delicate cycle.
Pro tip: Use a mesh laundry bag to prevent the fine chiffon from snagging on other clothes.

Satin & Silky Finishes
Hand wash or delicate machine wash.
Pro tip: Never wring or twist satin; it can permanently distort the fibres. For viscose garments, reshape whilst damp.

Metallic & Lurex
Hand wash cold.
Pro tip: Turn inside out before washing to protect the sparkle from rubbing against other surfaces.

Plisse & Pleated
Machine wash cold; never iron.
Pro tip: To dry, hang immediately. The pleats are heat-set, so avoid the dryer at all costs.

Cotton
Machine wash at 30°C.
Pro tip: To prevent shrinking, avoid high heat and air dry whenever possible.

Linen
Machine wash cold or hand wash.
Pro tip: Linen thrives with air drying; if you must iron, do so while the fabric is still slightly damp. For 100% linen garments use 2 dot iron.

Swimwear
Hand wash cold; rinse after every use.
Pro tip: Rinse in fresh water immediately after the pool or beach to remove chlorine and salt. Dry away from direct sunlight. Do not bleach.

Faux Fur
Professional dry clean or spot clean.
Pro tip: If it gets caught in the rain, let it air dry away from a radiator, then brush the fur upward.

3. General Garment Maintenance

Keep your wardrobe looking sharp with these quick fixes:

  • Fabric Shavers for Knits: Over time, friction can cause small "bobbles" or pilling on knitted items. Use a handheld fabric shaver to gently remove these and refresh the surface.
  • Lint Rollers for Dark Colors: Darker fabrics attract lint and dust. Use a lint roller to quickly remove fluff from your darker dresses and coats before heading out.

4. Heat is not good for delicate fabrics:

  • Skip the Tumble Dryer: Tumble drying can shrink fibres and destroy the "drape" of a dress. Air drying is better for your clothes and the environment.
  • Steaming over Ironing: For our ruffled and tiered dresses, a hand-steamer is your best friend. It removes wrinkles without the risk of burning or flattening the fabric.
  • Ironing: If you must iron, do it on the reverse side on the lowest heat setting.

5. Storage

How you store your clothes is just as important as how you wash them.

  • Avoid Wire Hangers: These can "poke" shoulders out of shape. Use wider padded or velvet hangers for delicate straps.
  • Weighty Knits: If you have a heavier knitted item, fold it instead of hanging it to prevent it from stretching out over time.
  • Zip Up: Always close zippers and buttons before hanging to help the garment keep its structure.

6. Sustainability Checklist:

  • Wash at lower temperatures: 90% of a washing machine's energy goes into heating the water. Washing at 30°C or lower saves energy and protects color.
  • Eco-Detergent: Choose plant-based detergents. They are gentler on the delicate polyester and chiffon fibres we use.
  • Mend, Don't Throw: A loose thread or a missing button is an easy fix! Keeping a piece in rotation for just 9 months longer reduces its carbon footprint by 30%.
